DBZ Creator Akira Toriyama Returns With ‘Dragon Ball: Daima’ Series, Coming Fall 2024

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is back, and in a big way. After shifting to offering general narrative guidance and character designs for the franchise’s recent titles, he has left the backseat to work on a new project from Toei Animation in a more hands-on capacity.

Titled Dragon Ball: Daima, it was unveiled at this year’s New York Comic Con alongside a brief teaser, which shows the chibi versions of Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and Krillin, Piccolo, and more in action. The animated show will debut in the fall of 2024, and seems to have taken a leaf out of Dragon Ball GT‘s page, where Goku was turned into a child.

“There are some things I can’t say but one thing I can tell you is [in] this production Akira Toriyama has been deeply involved beyond his usual capacity overseeing the original work, story, character design, and more,” executive producer Akio Iyoku said during a panel at the event. “Additionally, [Toriyama] has planned entirely new episodes for the storyline so please look forward to the start of the series.”

While much of the story details are kept under wraps, fans can expect a meta, fourth-wall-breaking approach, as the trailer reveals a villain who’s aware of Goku’s history across different Dragon Ball anime and manga. The culprit who used the dragon balls to wish for the chibi-fication also remains an open guess.

In any case, Toriyama’s involvement in the project certainly spell good news for fans who’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on a new series since the conclusion of Dragon Ball Super. It doesn’t hurt that the animation for Dragon Ball: Daima is extremely slick, too. Oh, and did we mention that Goku gets his trusty Power Pole back?
