Winston Duke, known for his role as M’Baku in Marvel’s Black Panther franchise, has expressed his interest in playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the upcoming DC Universe film, The Brave and the Bold. As DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn begins casting for this new Batman, Duke sees an opportunity to redefine the iconic character.
In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Duke discussed his desire to play the Caped Crusader, suggesting that fans should start a campaign to support his casting. His ambition is driven by a desire to challenge traditional perceptions of what Batman should represent. Read his full statement:
“Listen, man, can you start that [campaign]? I would say I challenge you to get on all these socials and push for me. Get your community. I would love to. I would love to do that as Batman. I’d love any opportunity to explore new characters, to change narratives around some of these entrenched ideas of how these characters are supposed to look, sound, and perform. I’m all for it.”
James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold is part of his Gods and Monsters plan for the DCU, and is expected to introduce a fresh portrayal of Batman with a release targeted around 2027. While Duke is not officially in talks for the role, he joins other actors like Jake Gyllenhaal (Road House) and Alan Ritchson (Reacher) who have also shown interest in the role. Duke previously voiced Batman in the audio drama podcast Batman Unburied, penned by The Dark Knight trilogy writer David S. Goyer.
Duke’s portrayal of M’Baku has showcased his physicality and charisma, qualities that could translate well to the role of Batman. Beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Duke has appeared in other significant roles, including Us directed by Jordan Peele, and the upcoming The Fall Guy, highlighting his versatility as an actor.
As casting for The Brave and the Bold continues, Gunn has emphasised that there is no rush to finalise decisions, as the script is still in development. The film is not an immediate priority, with Gunn focused on other projects, including a SUPERMAN film to kick off the new DC Universe. However, the interest from Duke and others shows a strong desire from established actors to take on the role of Gotham City’s protector.
