‘Beetlejuice 2’ Makes Glorious Return To Warner Bros. Discovery After 35 Years

The waiting game is finally over. After decades of being trapped in development hell, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Beetlejuice 2 is officially in development. The news comes by the way of a sizzle reel revealed at CinemaCon 2023, which ended off by showing various logos for upcoming projects, including Superman: Legacy, The Batman Part II, and Beetlejuice 2.

The long-gestating sequel has been a long time coming, with previous reports highlighting Jenny Oretega’s potential involvement in it. The Wednesday star was said to be in negotiations to play the role of Winona Ryder’s Lydia from the original, while Michael Keaton is expected to return. None of this is confirmed as of yet, however.

No further details about Beetlejuice 2 are known, but it should mark a warm homecoming for fans after 35 long years. Tim Burton, who directed the original 1988 cult classic, will reportedly helm the sequel, which is eyeing a shoot in late May or early June this year.

The road to development hasn’t been easy. While Keaton first teased his involvement more than 10 years ago, it was only in 2017 that the follow-up was revealed in official capacity. The same year, a script for Beetlejuice 2 reportedly underwent a rewrite, and in 2022, news surfaced that Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B will be reviving the movie.

Apart from Keaton, the first film also starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jordan, Catherine O’Hara, and more. The box office hit follows a recently deceased couple who, as ghosts haunting their former home, contact Beetlejuice, an obnoxious and devious “bio-exorcist” from the Netherworld, to scare away the house’s new inhabitants.
