Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’ Filled With Joy And Hope, And Swimming In Real Melted Chocolate

Timothée Chalamet (Dune, The French Dispatch), star of the upcoming Wonka, revealed that he got the opportunity to swim in real melted chocolate while filming the movie.

Chalamet is not the first actor to embody the character of Willy Wonka, based on Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Gene Wilder gave an eccentric and sinister portrayal in the 1971 adaptation that elevated the character to iconic status. Meanwhile, Johnny Depp depicted Willy Wonka as a lonely, out-of-touch recluse in the 2005 Tim Burton reboot.

While unveiling the trailer to Wonka at CinemaCon, Chalamet said that previous iterations of Wonka were more “cynical,” while his version “is a Willy that’s full of joy and hope and desire to become the greatest chocolatier.” The movie will serve as an origin story about the character, and takes place as his notorious chocolate factory prepares to open.

The trailer shown to audiences at CinemaCon has him making people fly with his magical chocolates, as he dances around and pursues his dream of being an amazing chocolatier.

“Every good thing in this world started with a dream,” the titular chocolatier says in the trailer. “So you hold onto yours.”

Wonka also stars Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, and many others, and is directed by Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2). The movie is slated to release on 15 December 2023.
