Avatar 2 & New Star Wars Trilogy Delayed A Year Following Disney’s Release Reschedule

Unfortunately for fans of Star Wars or James Cameron’s Avatar, you will have to wait quite a while longer to catch these films in theatres. Disney has recently announced several changes to its release calendar, which includes delays to a new Star Wars movie, and the Avatar sequel which was slated to release in 2021.

According to Variety, the new Star Wars film will be the first in a trio of movies, and will instead debut in theatres on 23 December 2023. The second and third films will release on 19 December 2025 and 17 December 2027 respectively. Disney has not released much else about the film including what it will entail.

As for Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to Avatar, it will instead be delayed till 16 December 2022, whereas the next three films will subsequently release in the holiday period of 2024, 2026, and 2028. 

The delay came as a result of the surging number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., with theatres shutting its doors in an effort to help curb the spread of the virus. Other films that got delayed include the Spider-Man sequel starring Tom Holland, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet
