Hot on the heels of the highly anticipated return of One Piece Season 2, the creative minds behind Netflix’s hit series are setting sail for another ambitious endeavour. Tomorrow Studios is working on a live-action adaptation of cult anime Samurai Champloo, with original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe on board.

Speaking to Variety, executive producer Becky Clements shared how it came together: “We had dinner with [Watanabe] in Japan and said, ‘If we move forward on doing Samurai Champloo, we really want you to be a part of the creative.’ We were thrilled that he was willing to do that.”
Since the project is in early development, no network has been attached. No other details were shared, but Clements maintained that music will still “be central to the process, with plans to establish the show’s sound with a “major recording artist”.
The decision to involve Watanabe more creatively is shaped by the studio’s prior experience adapting his other signature work, Cowboy Bebop, for Netflix in 2021, which was not well received by fans and was cancelled after one season. It’s a far cry from the positive reception for the live-action One Piece series, where manga creator Eiichiro Oda has an active role in every stage of production.
“For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene,” Watanabe shared previously. “It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop, and I realised at that point that if I wasn’t involved, it would not be Cowboy Bebop. I felt that maybe I should have done this. Although the value of the original anime is somehow far higher now.”

Released in 2004, the Samurai Champloo anime is set in a fictionalised version of Edo-period Japan and ran for 26 episodes. It featured a blend of traditional elements and anachronistic cultural references, including hip-hop, and was structured like a road movie, earning praise for its animation and music.
The full synopsis reads, “Mugen is a ferocious, animalistic warrior with a fighting style inspired by break-dancing. Jin is a ronin samurai who wanders the countryside alone. They may not be friends, but their paths continually cross. And when ditzy waitress Fuu gets them out of hot water with the local magistrate, they agree to join her search for the samurai who smells like sunflowers.”
