Netflix’s ‘The One Piece’ Anime Remake Brings Back Iconic Luffy Voice Actor Mayumi Tanaka

Luffy is back, and in more ways than one. After dropping a new key visual for the first episode of Wit Studio’s The One Piece remake at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Netflix has followed up with a trailer for the upcoming series, which will go back to where it all started and reintroduce the Straw Hat Crew and other familiar faces.

Alongside snippets of the early days of the East Blue Arc, including Gol D Roger’s legendary final speech, the one-minute clip also confirmed that Mayumi Tanaka, who voiced Luffy in the original anime, is reprising her role. As previously reported, The One Piece is billed as a “fresh take” on the beloved franchise and will be separate from both Toei Animation’s 1,167-episode-long run and Netflix’s live-action TV adaptation.

Masashi Koizuka is directing the project at Wit Studio, the creative powerhouse behind Attack on Titan, Spy X Family, and Vinland Saga, while Hideaki Abe serves as assistant director. Yuki Hayashi, whose credits include My Hero Academia and Haikyu!!, is composing with Taku Kishimoto, with Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda responsible for character designs. The first season is set to adapt the first 50 chapters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga — partway through the Baratie Arc, where Sanji first appears — across seven episodes, clocking in at around 300 minutes in total.

The One Piece sets sail in February 2027, but a special Lego animation project, slated for release on the streamer on 29 September, can help to tide over the wait. For those who want to do some catching up or revisit the swashbuckling adventure, here’s the official synopsis for the original anime:

Monkey D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become King of the Pirates. With his rubber-like stretching powers granted by the supernatural Devil Fruit, the spirited young pirate seeks the legendary treasure known as the One Piece. He’ll chart a course for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and recruit a motley crew to build his Straw Hat Pirates one bond at a time. This is one captain who’ll never drop anchor until he and his friends all reach their dreams!”
