Microsoft Says Next-Gen ‘Project Helix’ Hybrid Xbox Will Play Console & PC Games

Xbox has shared some key updates concerning its next-generation hybrid console, currently dubbed “Project Helix”, stating that not only will it play both Xbox and PC games, it will also apparently “lead in performance”.

This came from a post by Microsoft’s newly-announced gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, on social media, where she wrote that “Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games” and that the team is “looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios” at the GDC Festival of Gaming in March 2026.

Of course, the rumour that the next-gen Xbox would be a hybrid console able to play PC games already began circulating back in October 2025, but the latest statements from Sharma all but confirm the fact. The question now is which specific games or PC storefronts “Project Helix” will support, with Steam obviously being the biggest contender so far.

Additionally, there’s also a chance that users will even be able to play select PlayStation titles on Xbox’s upcoming console, as titles like Ghost of Tsushima or God of War Ragnarök are already available on Steam, but this would only encompass Sony’s current backlog, following the studio’s recent announcement that it’s dropping its current strategy of bringing PlayStation console exclusives to PC due to weak demand.

Xbox Series X (2020)

Currently, most recently released Xbox games are already available on both console and PC on Xbox’s PC storefront, so Sharma’s statement could very well refer to the fact that all current titles on that particular store will be available on “Project Helix”, but that’s all speculation at this point. In any case, details might be revealed sooner than expected, with the upcoming console previously reported by AMD to be on track for a 2027 launch.

In any case, opting to bring Steam into the Xbox console fold would certainly prove beneficial for Microsoft, especially considering how PlayStation is dominating the current console wars with better exclusives. With the latter backtracking on its cross-platform endeavours, maybe it’s now Xbox’s turn to shine and turn the tables for the next console showdown.
