The animal companions of Zootopia 2 are wild, and they cannot be tamed. The long-awaited sequel has made Disney history as its highest-grossing animated film of all time, pushing Frozen 2 to second place.

It won by a hair’s breadth, earning US$1.46 billion at the global box office, compared to the former’s US$1.45 billion in 2019. Of the haul, US$333 million came from domestic audiences, while overseas markets contributed a staggering US$1.13 billion. The success hardly comes as a surprise, as the buddy cop adventure reclaimed the top box office spot in its third weekend following a slight drop in the second week.
Another milestone to keep score of — Zootopia 2 is also the fastest PG-rated movie ever to hit the coveted US$1 billion mark, which it achieved after just 17 days of release. The reception was particularly outstanding in China, where it collected an estimated US$570 million, the highest for a Hollywood production by far. Avatar: Fire and Ash is the only contender that comes close, now that it has crossed the US$100 million milestone in the country.
The sequel is one of three movies to gross over US$1 billion worldwide in 2025, joining the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake (US$1.03 billion) and China’s Ne Zha 2, which remains the overall box office champion with a tally of over US$2.2 billion. Together, Disney’s juggernaut duo led it to rack up US$6 billion globally for the first time in six years.

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon a Time) as the enthusiastic bunny Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman (Ozark) as the clever fox Nick Wilde, Zootopia 2 follows the pair in their pursuit of reptile Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once) across the titular animal haven, as they attempt to clear their names after being framed. Other returning voices include Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellweather, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, singer Shakira as Gazelle, Tommy Chong as Yax, and Maurice LaMarche as Mr Big.
