The dynamic duo of Toy Story will blast off to infinity and beyond once again in its upcoming fifth entry, as the spotlight shines brighter on another character. In an interview with WIVB, Tim Allen, the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the animated film series, shared more tidbits about the sequel, including a reunion with his on-screen cowboy counterpart, Woody, and a heavier focus on Jessie the Cowgirl.

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie. Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more,” he teased.
The actor and comedian has portrayed the iconic character since the original 1995 feature, and is set to reprise his role in Toy Story 5 alongside Hanks as Woody. Joan Cusack’s Jessie was first introduced in the 1999 follow-up, getting her fair share of attention with an emotional story of losing faith in humans after being abandoned by her previous owner.
It’s unclear whether the highly anticipated movie will build on that or feature a whole new plot point altogether, but Allen promises fans that a “really good story” lies in wait. “It’s a very, very clever story. Do you wanna do five of these? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom. It’s really clever,” said the franchise veteran previously.
He continued, “It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. It’s really good.”

Directed by Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 follows Buzz, Woody, and the gang as they come face to face with a new enemy — technology. It releases in theatres on 19 June 2026, and will serve as the latest addition to a beloved series that has grossed over US$3.3 billion worldwide.
