‘Michael’ Reclaims Top Box Office Spot In 4th Week, Moonwalks Towards Record For Biggest Music Biopic

The King of Pop has got the moves, and it’s the sweet dance of victory. After losing its box-office crown to The Devil Wears Prada 2 the last two weekends, Michael is now back in the No. 1 spot both domestically and globally.

Antoine Fuqua’s biopic about the musical icon collected US$26.3 million in North America and US$57.7 million from foreign markets in its fourth outing, culminating in US$703 million worldwide. These figures put it as only the second film of 2026 to cross the global ticket sales mark of US$700 million, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the momentum will only continue, as Michael hasn’t yet opened in Japan, so there’s a chance that it could surpass 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody (US$911 million) as the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.

In second place is the highly anticipated reunion of the OG The Devil Wears Prada cast members, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, which is closing in on US$550 million overseas. The sequel follows Miranda Priestly (Streep), who is struggling against Emily Charlton (Blunt), her former assistant-turned-rival executive, as they compete for advertising revenue amid the decline of print media while Miranda nears retirement. While popular in North America, the sequel has been doing exceptionally well overseas, garnering a combined US$546.2 million to date.

Curry Barker’s supernatural horror title, Obsession, landed third, scaring up US$16.1 million at the domestic box office to overtake the fourth-ranked Mortal Kombat II. The follow-up to 2021’s adaptation of the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias saw a 53 percent decline from its opening weekend, with overseas territories raking in US$10 million, and currently stands at US$101 million globally to date.

Amazon MGM’s holdover, The Sheep Detectives, rounds out the top five. The Hugh Jackman-starring live-action/CGI hybrid has added US$14 million to its global haul of US$58.7 million, following a flock of talking sheep who are determined to solve the suspicious death of their beloved shepherd, played by Jackman, who read them detective novels regularly despite having no idea they could understand him. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, directors of the surprise hit Project Hail Mary, served as executive producers.
