Tomb Raider Sequel Release Date Delayed Indefinitely

Alicia Vikander will be returning once again as Lara Croft for the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider movie, but it looks like it will take a couple more years till fans will get to see the movie on the big screens.

Initially set for a 19 March 2021 release, the upcoming sequel that is reportedly based on games Rise of The Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will now be delayed indefinitely. The announcement from MGM came Tuesday, citing COVID-19 and theatres continuing to be closed as reasons for the delay.

MGM announced its latest release date changes, as theatres continue to be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The plan was for us to start making one this year, of course, due to the [pandemic] situation, that’s now very different,” Vikander said in a recent interview with EW. “We’re still in discussions about it, so I hope we can probably get to it next year.”

Other details of the Tomb Raider sequel is still unknown apart from Ben Wheatley, who directed Netflix’s recent adaptation of Rebecca, being tapped on to direct the sequel. Joining him in writing the script is his spouse Amy Jump.
