Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation has paused production after lead actress Sophie Turner suffered an injury on set.

As per Variety, the news was first reported by British tabloid The Sun, which stated that Turner had aggravated a pre-existing back injury while filming, leading to production being halted for at least one month, and potentially up to six months, to give her the time to recover. With Tomb Raider’s current release window being sometime in 2027, it remains to be seen if Turner’s injury will affect the series’ release date.

“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover,” read a statement by a Prime Video representative. “We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”

The series, which began production in January this year, is helmed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), and will star Turner alongside an ensemble cast that includes Sigourney Weaver (Alien) as Evelyn Wallis, Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) as Atlas DeMornay, Bill Paterson (House of the Dragon) as Winston, and Martin Bobb-Semple (One of Us Is Lying) as Zip. The show is also set to introduce new faces to the Tomb Raider lore, such as Gerry (Jack Bannon, Pennyworth), Lara’s personal pilot, Sasha (Sasha Luss, Anna), Lara’s deeply competitive adversary, and Lukas (August Wittgenstein, The Crown) an illegal raider who shares history with Lara.

Making its debut in 1996, the Tomb Raider video game franchise is one of the industry’s most recognisable IPs, receiving numerous sequels and franchise reboots over the years. Two new titles are also set to be released over the next two years, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a modern remake of the original game, which is due out in 2026, and 2027’s Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next mainline title in the franchise, which will see Alix Wilton Regan take over the role of the titular adventurer from Camilla Luddington, who portrayed her over three games starting from the 2013 franchise reboot.
