Netflix’s hit series Wednesday is poised for an electrifying return, with Jenna Ortega reprising her role as the enigmatic Wednesday Addams in season 2. Adding to the excitement, Tim Burton, acclaimed for his work on Sleepy Hollow and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will bring his unique directorial flair to the series yet again, directing half of the upcoming season’s episodes.
In an interview with Collider, Alfred Gough, Wednesday’s co-creator, detailed Burton’s involvement. “He’s doing four [episodes]. He’s doing half the season like he did in Season 1,” he revealed. Although Gough did not specify which episodes Burton would direct in Wednesday season 2, his leadership in the initial season set a high standard, directing the first four episodes before handing off to other directors for the latter half.
Gough shared that Burton’s deep affection for the series and its lead actress was a major factor in his return, dispelling any notions that he might step back after the initial season. This commitment speaks volumes about Burton’s investment in the storytelling and his desire to continue shaping the series’ darkly whimsical world.
“He just loves the show, and he loves doing it and loves working with Jenna, and it’s great. Believe me, we’re thrilled because I’m with you, I would’ve thought he’d be like, ‘I did it. Peace out.’ Yeah. No, he doesn’t do that. I think when he loves something… This is the thing, he’s not cynical at all. And I think that’s the other reason Beetlejuice has worked, because he didn’t make it for any other reason than he wanted to make that movie. He wanted to tell that story. There is nothing cynical. It is completely Tim. And I think it’s amazing when you think he’s had a forty-year career, he has an incredibly specific style. We all know what a Tim Burton movie is, and it’s so unique and peculiar, and yet it’s somehow completely universal, and it’s… There was literally… I can’t think of any other filmmaker like him.”
Wednesday initially premiered on Netflix in November 2022 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The show follows Wednesday Addams during her time at Nevermore Academy, where she navigates her complex psychic abilities, thwarts a monstrous killing spree, and unravels a decades-old mystery. Its success led Netflix to swiftly greenlight Wednesday season 2, which began production in May 2024.
Wednesday season 2 will see many familiar faces returning, including Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, and Hunter Doohan. Notably, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, and Isaac Ordonez have been promoted to series regulars, reprising their roles as Wednesday’s eccentric family members. The cast will also welcome new talents such as Steve Buscemi and Thandiwe Newton.
Anticipation continues to build, with filming for Wednesday season 2 expected to conclude towards the end of the year. The exact release date remains under wraps, but fans can currently enjoy the first season of Wednesday on Netflix, reliving the mystery and intrigue as they await the next chapter of Wednesday Addams’ adventures.
