Nintendo has dropped the second trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the much-anticipated animated sequel is shaping up to be a love letter to the franchise, with the clip jam-packed with appearances from iconic franchise faces like Birdo, the Tostarenans, and most importantly, everyone’s favourite dino, Yoshi.
The two-minute-long clip begins with a familiar sight for those who played 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey, as it sees Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) arriving at the Sand Kingdom, and are greeted by its natives, the sombrero-wearing Tostarenans, who promptly point them in the direction of a pipe, to which a mysterious beast lurks.
Armed with Fire-Flower powers, the duo ventures into an inverted pyramid, the same one seen in the game, ready to take on the beast, except it turns out to be none other than the adorable green dinosaur Yoshi, whom they befriend.
As perhaps the most iconic franchise character, apart from the moustached plumbers, Yoshi marks his first movie appearance following his debut in the 1990 NES classic Super Mario World. Known for his long, frog-like tongue and his adorable voice, Yoshi has since appeared in multiple games, including some standalone titles, mostly serving as a rideable mount for Mario, so it’s highly likely that this will be seen in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, too.

Yoshi wasn’t the only familiar face to show up in the trailer, as the clip also featured a showdown between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Birdo, an enemy from the 1988 game Super Mario Bros. 2, featuring the latter performing her iconic flying egg attack. Luigi also took the spotlight, rocking his Frog Luigi power-up, and is seen leaping to save a Blue Toad from a giant Boss Bass. Additionally, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer also featured blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos from other familiar faces like a Moe-Eye and even Mouser.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see other returning faces from 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, like Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson), alongside new characters like Rosalina (Brie Larson) and Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). The sequel is also set to debut in theatres two days early on 1 April 2026 for select regions like the United States, with a global release on 3 April 2026.
