‘The Last of Us’ Creator Neil Druckmann Dashes Hopes For A Third Game

Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann has some bad news for fans of The Last of Us, warning that 2020’s The Last of Us Part II might be the end for the series and putting a damper on any hopes for a third game.

While speaking to Variety about season two of The Last of Us TV series, Druckmann was asked about the possibility of a third game in the series, to which he promptly shut down the prospect. “I was waiting for this question,” he said, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it.”

To be fair, his statement was far from a confirmation of any sort, but it does leave the future of the franchise up in the air for now. Granted, The Last of Us Part II brought closure to the stories of both Ellie and Abby, so it’s difficult to see where a third game might fit into its timeline, apart from focusing on subcharacters like Tommy, or introducing a brand new cast of characters.

It seems that Naughty Dog has chosen to move on instead, currently hard at work tackling their next IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a spacefaring action-adventure game first announced at The Game Awards back in December last year. Due to its scale and current lack of a release window, it’s safe to say that the game is likely years away from completion, leaving no time for the team to work on a The Last of Us sequel.

At least for now, The Last of Us fans can get their post-apocalyptic fix from the HBO TV series, with its second season set to air on 13 April 2025 on its streaming platform Max. Season two will not adapt the second game in its entirety, however, with HBO’s Francesca Orsi teasing a 4-season plan and opening up the possibility to further flesh out the backstories of its characters beyond that of the games.
