Matt Reeves‘ version of the Caped Crusader will soon return to the big screen, with filming for the sequel to The Batman beginning next year in 2025. This latest update comes after an earlier announcement of a planned early 2025 shoot, one year before it’s slated to hit theatres on 2 October 2026.
The director shared the current status of the highly-anticipated outing in a conversation with Zoë Kravitz for Variety. “We’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year,” confirmed Reeves, who directed the 2022 film starring Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse, Tenet) in the lead role and Kravitz as Catwoman.
A gritty new take on the beloved protector of Gotham City, it follows Batman in his second year of crime fighting as he uncovers corruption with ties to his family while pursuing the Riddler (Paul Dano, The Fabelmans), an enigmatic serial killer targeting the city’s elite. The pic isn’t a part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe (DCU), and will serve as a springboard for a Batman shared universe that includes HBO’s spin-off series, The Penguin, which enjoyed a successful first season.
While nothing has been cast in stone, the future of the Colin Farrell-led offshoot is looking optimistic. In the same interview, Reeves revealed that plans for Season 2 are currently underway, indicating a promising start.
“We’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season,” the filmmaker said. “That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
Set one week after the events of The Batman, The Penguin charts the rise of the mobster who will become known as The Penguin after the death of Carmine Falcone. The ensemble cast includes Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) as Sofia Falcone / The Hangman, Rhenzy Feliz (Runaways) as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly (Jack Ryan) as Johnny Viti, Clancy Brown (Starship Troopers) as Salvatore Maroni, Carmen Ejogo (Selma) as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi (Luke Cage) as Dr. Julian Rush.
