Star Wars Horror Project Reportedly In The Works At Disney

The ever-growing Star Wars universe has no shortage of narrative potential, and horror may be next on the list. According to Andor creator Tony Gilroy, a more sinister project set in a galaxy far, far away is reportedly in the works at Disney and Lucasfilm, though no other details were revealed.

Star Wars Horror Project Andor Showrunner

Speaking to Business Insider, the showrunner teased a venture into darker, scarier waters when asked how he’d tackle the genre shift: “They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.”

The statement follows his tongue-in-cheek comment to SFX Magazine in March, in which he entertained the idea of “a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie”. Gilroy later clarified that he was being “agnostic about what should be done,” and how “riffing doesn’t work” with the community, but stressed the importance of finding the right person for the job.

“The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe… you can do anything,” Gilroy added, referencing his time with Andor. “So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favour that we were given from The Mandalorian, and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool.”

Fingers crossed that it proves accurate, as fans have long been clamouring for a mature, unrestrained horror twist to the formula. The franchise is no stranger to dark corners and shady underbellies, so there’s already some prime material to tap into — in fact, Longlegs director Osgood Perkins previously shared an ambitious pitch centred on the “collected dreams and nightmares of Darth Vader told as short stories.”

It’s unclear whether the project will be a TV show or a movie, but fans can tide over the wait for further development with Season 2 of Andor. The slow-burn political thriller is due for its sophomore outing on Disney+ on 22 April, with the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in Japan expected to bear more good news from 18 to 20 April.
