‘Longlegs’ Director Has An Insane Pitch For A Darth Vader TV Series

Veteran horror director Osgood Perkins has shared his ambitious plans for Star Wars icon Darth Vader, with the bold intentions to explore the psyche of one of the films’ most recognisable villains via a series of short stories.

Perkin recently took part in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit, where he spoke mostly on his directorial journey making the recently released comedy horror film The Monkey. In the thread, a question was asked if there was a story that he wished he had the budget or technology to make into a movie, to which he replied, “The collected dreams and nightmares of Darth Vader told as short stories.”

His pitch certainly opens a world of possibilities, as leveraging his experience to dive into the thoughts of the troubled villain allows for plenty of creative freedom that could not only provide original ideas beyond the series’ canon, but break away from the limits of reality too, offering a less grounded and more abstract experience that will no doubt come as a breath of fresh air for fans.

As a collection of short stories, Perkins’ pitch could possibly take the form of an anthology similar to 2021’s Star Wars: Visions — where each episode provides a unique idea to explore different sides of Vader — and showcase the juxtaposition between his hopeful naivety as a young Anakin and his eventual hatred after being tainted by the dark side. With dreams as its subject matter, animation seems to be the best medium for such a project, as it allows for the freedom to feature reality-bending visuals better suited to spotlight Vader’s fragmented mind.

Perkins is certainly no stranger to taking risks, with a repertoire of horror films across a wide range of themes, from 2020’s dark fantasy adaptation Gretel & Hansel to the disturbing 2024 thriller Longlegs and most recently, the aforementioned comedy horror flick The Monkey. By bringing his flexibility as a writer and director into the world of Star Wars, Perkins has the potential to propel the franchise in a bold new direction by offering a darker, more twisted look at its most famous villain.
