‘Spider-Punk’ Getting Spin-Off With Voice Actor Daniel Kaluuya Also Writing

Sony Pictures Animation is in the early stages of developing Spider-Punk, a new animated spin-off of 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The project will centre on Hobie Brown, the punk-rock iteration of Spider-Man, whose primary weapon is his guitar. Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced Hobie in Across the Spider-Verse, is developing and co-writing the feature alongside Ajon Singh.

Story details are still under wraps, but Kaluuya’s fan-favourite character is set to return in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third film in the animated trilogy. Producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal, who are behind the core franchise, will also produce Spider-Punk.

It’s easy to see why Kaluuya’s character has been chosen for this spin-off. With his enigmatic allegiance, undeniable swaggering charisma, fascinating character design, and carefully illustrated good looks, which Miles Morales himself notes with envy, the character proved to be a hit amongst viewers and fans alike.

Unfortunately, for all of Spider-Punk’s fans, there has been no set release date for Spider-Punk yet. Meanwhile, Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently scheduled to swing into theatres in June 2027. The film will pick up where the previous one left off, with Miles on the run, trying to evade capture by foes and other Spider-Man variants, while also protecting his family from grave danger without the aid of even Gwen and his other friends.

The Spider-Verse series has been both critically lauded and commercially successful. The original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) brought in US$384 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its 2023 sequel climbed even higher, grossing US$690 million globally.

Kaluuya rose to prominence with his Oscar-nominated performance in 2017’s Get Out and has since starred in films like Black Panther (2018), Widows (2018), Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), for which he won an Academy Award, and Jordan Peele’s Nope. He’s also currently developing a live-action Barney movie for A24 and Mattel.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will swing into theatres on 25 June 2027, while Spider-Punk has no release date.
