Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is going full steam ahead on production, now that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are over. The movie’s official X / Twitter account has released a teaser image of Shadow, the edgy, cooler counterpart to the blue speedster, decked out in his spiffy sneakers.
The upcoming film is set to speed into theatres on 20 December 2024, and will serve as a sequel to both previous movies and Paramount+’s Knuckles spin-off series, which is eyeing an early 2024 launch. The red echidna was first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, proving to be a worthy foe for Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), as well as a popular character among fans.
In fact, Shadow’s appearance was teased in the sequel’s mid-credits scene, presumably setting him up as the antagonist of the third film. Not much else is known about Sonic the Hedgehog 3, including the voice actor for Shadow. However, it’s been confirmed that Jeff Fowler will return to direct again after helming the first two live-action flicks, with a handful of the cast also returning to the project. Apart from Schwartz and O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba (Knuckles), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), and Jim Carrey (Doctor Eggman) are among those coming back for more action.
In any case, the threequel will have some big shoes to fill. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a box office hit, becoming the highest-grossing video game film of all time in the States until The Super Mario Bros. Movie seized the throne earlier this year with a global box office haul of more than US$1 billion.
