Seiko Celebrates Mobile Suit Gundam’s 40th Anniversary With Limited Edition Watches

So far, Gundam has announced several collaborations, all to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Gundam anime Mobile Suit Gundam. There was their collaboration with Uniqlo where several shirts based on the characters and robots from the classic mecha series were released. Then there was their collaboration with G-Shock, where they released four new watches themed after the classic mechs from the anime.

Mobile Suit Gundam is back with another collaboration and this time it is with watchmaker Seiko who will be releasing three limited edition Gundam-inspired watches from its Prospex LX series.

The watches will will be based on three popular mobile suits: RX-78-2 Gundam, MS-06 Zaku II, and MS-06S Zaku II Char Custom.

Gundam Limited Edition

The Gundam Limited Edition is designed based on the titular Mobile Suit Gundam, otherwise known as RX-78-2 Gundam. Its watchface uses the classic white, blue, and red colouring of the Mobile Suit which will be instantly recognisable by fans of the series. The watch is priced at 630,000 yen, or approximately S$7,360.90. If you are thinking of getting this watch for yourself, do take note as only 30 Gundam Limited Edition watches will be released on August 9, 2019.

Zaku II Limited Edition

One of the two Zaku variants Seiko will be releasing is the Zaku II Limited Edition. A mainstay in the anime series’ One Year Way, the Zaku II will lend its signature olive green colouring to the Seiko Prospex watches. Unlike the Gundam Limited Edition, the Zaku II Limited Edition will be released on April 12, 2019, and will cost 400,000 yen, or approximately S$4,850.10. There will only be 1,000 of the Zaku II Limited Edition watches up for sale.

Char’s Zaku II Limited Edition

Char’s Zaku II was piloted by Commander Char Aznable during the One Year War. The commander had his mech painted in his own personal red colour and even had a horn attached to its head to distinguish it from the rest. Much like Char’s Zaku II, the watch will come in the mech’s deep red colour, and will cost 400,000 yen, or approximately US$3,600 / S$4,850. Just like the Zaku II Limited Edition, this watch will be released on April 12, 2019, and will only have 1,000 sets available.

This will probably not be the last we see from Gundam as they seem to be pulling out all the stops to celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary. We wonder what they will bring us next.
