Second ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Focused On Dunk & Egg Coming To Max

George R. R. Martin fans are getting spoiled this week, as HBO is back with another Game of Thrones project after announcing that House of the Dragon Season 2 is starting production.

The cable television company has confirmed another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, for its streaming service Max.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the story will feature the knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Egg. HBO has also released the show’s official summary, which reads:

“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Here’s a fun fact: Aegon V Targaryen is the great-grandfather of the Mother of Dragons herself.

First announced in 2021, the series will take place 90 years before the Game of Thrones storyline. Little else is known, such as casting or a release date, but it follows the three novellas in the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms collectionThe Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and Mystery Knight. Fans anticipating a potential fourth instalment to the series will have to wait a bit longer, though, with Winds of Winter still pending.

Those who are sticklers for book accuracy, meanwhile, are in luck, as Martin himself will be joining the Game of Thrones prequel project as a writer and executive producer. He will work alongside House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal (Rampage, Hercules) and House of the Dragon co-executive producers Ira Parker (Better Things, Rogue) and Vince Gerardis (Jumper, Game of Thrones).
