The Weasleys will soon welcome a new sibling into their household. After her stint as Ginny Weasley in the first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, young actress Gracie Cochrane has announced her departure from the role, citing “unforeseen circumstances”.
The news comes ahead of the show’s December premiere, marking the first major recasting for the creative team. Production is in the midst of wrapping, with a recently ordered second season set to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” Cochrane and her family said in a statement. “Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to [casting director] Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
HBO added, “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
Cochrane was first revealed as a cast member alongside twins Tristan and Gabriel Harland, who play Fred and George Weasley, respectively, and Ruari Spooner as Percy. While her character only has a fairly small presence in Season 1, her significance rapidly expands over the course of the story, starting with a victim of Tom Riddle’s (aka Voldemort) diary — later revealed to be one of the Horcruxes — who unwittingly opens the chamber in the second instalment, to becoming Harry’s girlfriend and wife.
Bonnie Wright portrayed Ginnie in the live-action films, and whoever fills the recast role will have a fair bit of heavy lifting to do, which can be challenging for any young child actor. For now, though, the show is set to premiere on 25 December, or Christmas Day, on HBO Max, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton starring as the main trio of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.

Other notable cast members include John Lithgow (Conclave) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid, Johnny Flynn (Stardust) as Lucius Malfoy, Luke Thallon (The Favourite) as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse (Alice in Wonderland) as Argus Filch, and more.
Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer on the project, while executive producer Mark Mylod is set to direct multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films are all executive producing.
