Disney’s live-action adaptations seem to keep on coming, with Sarah Polley (Women Talking, Stories We Tell) in talks to direct the Bambi adaptation.

Polley began her career in Hollywood as a child actress in 1985 Night Heat before transitioning into filmmaking. Her work behind the screen as a writer and director for Women Talking earned her an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar earlier this year.

Details surrounding the Bambi project first surfaced in 2020, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (The Magic Order, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) attached to pen the screenplay. Depth of Field Productions, run by Chris and Paul Weitz (Pinnochio, American Pie) and Andrew Miano (The Farewell, Good Kids), was on board to produce the film. However, it’s unclear if this team is still working together.

What we do know, though, is that Bambi will be a musical, and will feature music from six-time Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves. The film will resemble more Lion King than The Little Mermaid regarding the actors’ physical presence in the film. The only hope is that the stars doing the voice-acting will not overshadow their CGI-animated animal counterparts.

There is currently no set timeline on the film, from production to release date, especially with the ongoing unpredictable strike conditions.
