Marvel Eyes Top Gun: Maverick’s Lewis Pullman As The Sentry In ‘Thunderbolts’

Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman may be riding the highway to a different kind of danger zone. The actor is Marvel’s top choice to replace Steven Yeun in Thunderbolts, who was previously tapped to play the role of Sentry.

Both Pullman’s reps and the studio have yet to issue an official statement, but if a deal closes, he would star opposite Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell. The film will bow in July 2025, with Jake Schreier in the director’s seat.

Yuen was attached to Thunderbolts in February 2023, but it wasn’t until later in the year that Invincible creator Robert Kirkman accidentally spilled the beans on his casting. On 2 January 2024, news broke that the Walking Dead alum was departing the project due to a scheduling issue.

As with most Hollywood films last year, the feature focusing on Marvel’s villains and antiheroes was hit by the delays of the writers and actors strike. Black Widow scriptwriter Eric Pearson is penning the script, while Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will serve as producer. Not much else is known about plot of Thunderbolts, but the comic books offer an inkling of what’s to come.

Sentry (aka Robert Reynolds) first appeared in the Marvel comics in The Sentry #1 back in 2000. Introduced as a character with incredibly powerful abilities, he later learns of his dark alter-ego named the Void, who previously removed all memory of the Sentry from the entire world (similar to the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home) — including his own — to ensure his two halves remain separate forever.

As for Pullman, he played Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick, and most recently starred in Lessons in Chemistry opposite Marvel star Brie Larson.
