Prepare for check-in this September, as The Continental — full name The Continental: From the World of John Wick — is due to land then. Fresh off its poster reveal, Peacock has released the first trailer for the prequel series, and it’s a glorious sight to behold.
Coming in at just under a minute, it stays true to the John Wick appeal and features plenty of action, blood, guns, and all-around carnage. Colin Woodell’s Winston Scott takes centrestage here as the young version of the Continental Hotel owner, played by Ian McShane in the Keanu Reeves-led films.
There’s one prominent face missing from the trailer, though, and that’s Mel Gibson, who has been cast as a new character named Cormac. The Continental marks the actor’s first TV series project since 2004, with the casting having drawn backlash on social media when announced, due to his history of antisemitic comments.
Set roughly 40 years before the events in the feature film saga, the show explores the history of the titular establishment, which plays a big part in the Wick mythology. It lacks a concrete premiere date and runtime, and also stars Mishel Prada (KD), Ben Robson (Frankie), Hubert Point-Du Jour (Miles), Nhung Kate (Yen), Jessica Allain (Lou), Ayomide Adegun (Charon), Jeremy Bobb (Mayhew), and Peter Greene (Uncle Charlie). No Reeves back as Wick this time, unfortunately.
The Continental: From the World of John Wick will premiere in September 2023, and serves to expand the Wick-verse alongside its feature spin-off counterpart Ballerina, fronted by Ana de Armas. The official description for the Peacock prequel series is as follows:
“The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.”
