HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Renewed For Third Chapter Ahead Of Season 2 Premiere

HBO’s live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic survival adventure The Last of Us has been renewed for a third season ahead of the premiere of season two on 14 April.

Of course, the continuation of the show with its third chapter comes as no surprise, considering showrunner Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s plans to expand the narrative of the second game. While season one adapted the storyline of 2013’s The Last of Us in its entirety, the game’s massive follow-up, 2020’s The Last of Us Part II, is set to be split into multiple chapters for its adaptation, with Mazin predicting “one or two more seasons” before reaching the conclusion of its storyline.

“We approached Season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” Mazin said in a statement coinciding with the renewal announcement, “The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” added Druckmann, “Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions.”

Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by a dangerous fungal epidemic that transforms infected people into mindless zombies, The Last of Us season two will see the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as game protagonists Joel Miller and Ellie Williams, respectively, joined by new faces such as Kaitlyn Dever as Abby Anderson, a major character in the second game, alongside supporting characters like Isabela Merced’s Dina and Young Mazino’s Jesse. Following in the same vein as its predecessors, season three will most likely continue to expand upon the narrative beats of its source material and further flesh out the stories of its supporting cast.

“It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of The Last of Us is,” HBO drama and films head Francesca Orsi added in a further statement, “the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up and we’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.”

The Last of Us season two premieres on 14 April 2025 on Max, with more details on its third chapter sure to come in the months to come.
