Warner To Merge HBO Max and Discovery+ As One Streamer by Summer 2023

HBO To Follow Netflix And Crack Down On Password Sharing In 2024

Since Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing, streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu have joined in, and now, Max will too, in a new crackdown to discourage password sharing.

The move comes amid a series of price hikes that have caused subscribers to re-evaluate their streaming options, with Disney+ losing 1.3 million subscribers after the company implemented its price hike.

J.B. Perette, CEO and President of Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery remarked at a Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference that the “password-sharing crackdown, which, obviously, Netflix has implemented extremely successfully. We’re going to be doing that starting later this year and into ‘25, which is another growth opportunity for us.”

Max hopes to grow its subscriber base through the move, which would yield more profit if people who share the account create accounts with the streaming service. “You see Netflix’s success, but Netflix was in market for 17 years. That means people were sharing passwords for 17 years,” Perrette added. “We’ve been in the market for four if you count the HBO Max launch. Obviously, we’re not quite at the same scale, but relative to the scale of our business, it’s a meaningful opportunity.”

At least we’ll be able to enjoy Season 2 of HBO’s House of the Dragon this summer before Max’s crackdown on password sharing goes into effect in late 2024.
