Disney+ To Roll Out Paid Password Sharing In June

Password sharing crackdowns are the new normal for streaming services as they attempt to retain subscriber numbers, and like Netflix, which introduced an additional paid password sharing fee for an additional S$6.98 per non-household viewer, Disney+ has announced its plans to enter the password sharing market.

Disney+ Price Increase And Password-Sharing Crackdown

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the announcement in a CNBC interview, where he explained his intentions to turn the streaming service into a growth business, and that Disney+ would “launch its first real foray into password sharing” in June in selected markets, before rolling out the service globally in September.

Pricing details were not revealed in the interview, but speculatively, if Netflix’s additional subscriber prices are anything to go by, Disney+’s offerings are likely to be in the same price range. The streaming service began cracking down on password sharing in January 2024, after reporting a 1.3 million subscriber loss as a result of a recent price hike.

With Netflix and Disney+ introducing paid password sharing plans, a new trend has emerged across the streaming platform market, which could impact consumers should more changes surface in the coming months.
