‘God of War’ Amazon TV Series Onboards ‘Shogun’ Director Frederick E.O. Toye For First Two Episodes

Preparation is underway for the highly anticipated arrival of Kratos and Atreus at Amazon Prime Video, and veteran director Frederick E.O. Toye will be the first to map out their journey. As Variety reports, the filmmaker is set to helm the first two episodes of the TV series adaptation based on Santa Monica Studios’ hit video game.

The latest creative team addition joins Ronald D. Moore as showrunner, with casting underway for its two-season run. According to the official logline, the upcoming show will follow “father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” adapting Kratos’ story beginning with 2018’s God of War.

“Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” it adds.

Alongside showrunner duties, Moore is also writing and executive producing the project, which has undergone some rough patches since its reveal in 2022. After being tapped as the original showrunner, Rafe Judkins parted ways in 2024, resulting in a major creative overhaul late last year that saw Moore taking over the reins.

“Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they asked me to come in, I’m literally in the writer’s room, and that’s my new thing,” he said previously, adding that he cannot play the games.

“The controllers now… Press R1, which one’s R1, oh I’m dead! I can’t quite get a hold of that,” Moore joked after.

In any case, it appears that Amazon’s God of War adaptation is in good hands. Not only does Toye have an Emmy to his name, awarded for his directing work on FX’s Shogun in 2024, but he also worked on hit shows like Westworld, The Walking Dead, and Watchmen, and is no stranger to Amazon productions, with credits on episodes of The Boys, Fallout, The Terminal List, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.
