George Miller Has Plans For Another Mad Max Prequel After ‘Furiosa’

Franchise creator George Miller is going full-throttle on developing Mad Max films, and he has his sights set on another prequel to Fury Road. Ahead of Furiosa‘s theatrical release on 24 May, the filmmaker teased the idea of a new project set in the post-apocalyptic universe while speaking to Entertainment Weekly.

“In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller explained. “And as we get towards the end of [Furiosa], the chronology, basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened. The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”

For fans of the series, one point stands out in particular — that Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (Venom, Peaky Blinders) in the 2015 flick, and his iconic vehicle, the Interceptor, will appear in the upcoming movie. This time, the titular character is portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) instead of Charlize Theron (Fast & Furious 9, The Old Guard), with the story covering her origins as a child 20 years before becoming the Imperator leader.

Not much else is known about Max’s cameo, but it seems to have opened up a path for Miller to expand on the world leading into Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie follows Max as he joins forces with Imperator Furiosa against the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his army in a high-octane, adrenaline-filled chase across the Wasteland.

The action scenes have gone down as one of the best in history, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga expected to deliver the same brand of exhilaration when it races into cinemas 24 May. Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Men in Black: International) stars alongside Taylor-Joy in the film, which has the following synopsis:

Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.
