Shōgun promises a rich narrative centred around the year 1600 in Japan, drawing inspiration from the true story of English navigator William Adams, the first Englishman to reach Japan. The series introduces Cosmo Jarvis (Persuasion) as John Blackthorne, a character modelled after Adams, who finds himself entangled in the political machinations of local leader Yoshii Toranaga, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada, as he battles adversaries on the Council of Regents.

The sneak peek highlights the meticulous attention to detail in the sets, locations, and costumes, which not only underscore Toranaga’s struggles but also offer viewers a vivid depiction of Japan as experienced by Blackthorne. With its groundbreaking storytelling and exploration of cultural clashes, Shōgun is poised to captivate audiences.

The narrative unfolds as Blackthorne arrives in Japan following the death of ruler Taiko Nakamura, navigating the complexities of 16th-century Japanese society alongside Mariko (played by Sawai), his Catholic translator. The series’ ambition is evident in its expansive set pieces and production design, setting high expectations for its success in 2024.

Shōgun explores themes of destiny, agency, and the intersection of diverse cultures, as highlighted by showrunner Justin Marks. Co-creator Rachel Kondo emphasizes the series’ immersive experiences, marking it as a significant portrayal of ancient Japan by an American TV show.

Shōgun is set to premiere on Disney+ on 27 February.
