Notably, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega exited the project under controversial circumstances related to Barrera’s comments on the Israel and Hamas conflict, which Spyglass deemed antisemitic. Barrera has since expressed her ongoing affection for the Scream series in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter despite the ordeal and is focusing on future projects, including the thriller Abigail.

Spyglass Media Group, holding the franchise rights, has not commented on these developments. Meanwhile, Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott marks a significant moment for the series, following her departure from Scream 7 due to a pay dispute. Kevin Williamson’s move to direct marks his directorial debut for the franchise, taking over from Christopher Landon. Guy Busick returns as screenwriter, continuing from his work on the 2022 reboot and Scream 7, with James Vanderbilt focusing on directing duties elsewhere but still producing alongside Project X Entertainment partners.

Williamson and Campbell have both expressed their excitement about their returns to the Scream universe on social media, with Campbell claiming that her “appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to her, has never waned”. The latest Scream movie, released in March 2023, set a franchise record with over US$168 million worldwide.

A release date for Scream 7 remains to be announced.
