Co-Op Shooter ‘Aliens: Fireteam Elite’ Gets Sequel, Finally Adds 4-Player Teams

Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Game Company have announced the sequel to their 2021 PvE co-op shooter, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, which looks set to ramp up the xenomorph horde slaying action with new abilities, enemy archetypes, and, most importantly, the much-needed addition of four-player fireteams.

Announced via an IGN First trailer, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 seems to poke fun at itself for not having a four-player co-op team previously (the original game was limited to three players per team, something that didn’t sit well with fans), with the clip opening with a cinematic of three marines being overrun by a horde of aliens, only for a fourth to show up and mow them down, exclaiming, “sorry I’m late!”

Apart from its most notable addition of a new team line-up, the sequel doesn’t really look too different from its predecessor, with snippets of gameplay showcasing near-identical visuals and familiar-looking environments. Even enemy archetypes are largely the same, with the return of the Prowler, the Spitter, and the Warrior, although the game is set to feature variants like the Pathogen Brute, previously a DLC exclusive, and a new mechanical enemy type, with shots of what looks to be a robotic spider.

In terms of the arsenal players will use to combat the xenomorphy threat, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 looks to bring back most elements from the first game too, with the return of the grenade-throwing Gunner class and the Particle Lance of the Lancer class, although they look set to receive upgrades to their skillset, with the trailer teasing deployable mines which freeze enemies in place, or even what looks to be a character wielding a stun ron melee weapon, which hints at either a new melee system, or a new class thats melee-focused. According to IGN, there will also be a Specialist class, a new customisable class that allows players to mix and match abilites from any class.

While details are few for now, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 will feature full cross-play support, alongside a Horde mode with dedicated maps on launch. We’ll just have to wait for more in-depth trailers to come to figure out just how different the sequel will be to make it stand out from the original.
