‘Chainsaw Man’ Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s One-Shot Manga Gets Anime Film

An anime film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back one-shot manga is officially in the works. Studio Durian — which has done designs on shows such as Deca-Dence and FLCL: Shoegaze, and provided animation assistance on The Boy and the Heron — is in charge of animation. The movie will premiere on 28 June 2024 in Japan.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who directed Shishigari, is directing the adaptation and also doing the character designs. Oshiyama previously worked on Chainsaw Man as a creature designer. He is also one of the founders of Studio Durian.

The Look Back anime will adapt the one-shot, which derives its title from the Oasis song Don’t Look Back In Anger. The Eisner Award-nominated manga was first published in 2021 on the Shonen Jump+ platform, and is also available to read on MANGA Plus. VIZ Media published the manga in English, describing the plot as “The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.”

Tatsuki Fujimoto is best known for creating the Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man series, which inspired an anime adaptation by MAPPA. The studio’s CEO, Manabu Otsuka, previously spoke about Fujimoto’s works and how he would love for MAPPA to adapt all of them. Fujimoto’s most recent work, besides the ongoing second part of Chainsaw Man, is another one-shot, titled Goodbye, Eri.
