The search for the next Karate Kid is over, with American Born Chinese star Ben Wang set to star alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio in the new Karate Kid film. An open casting call was announced by Sony last year, encouraging young talents to submit their audition tapes.
While details are mostly under wraps, we at least know that Daniel LaRusso will be returning as a mentor figure of sorts, as well as Mr. Han from the 2010 movie, though it’s unclear which part of the timeline the film will take place. Cobra Kai expanded the Karate Kid universe and has five seasons worth of plot to get into with a sixth season releasing this year, so the film could possibly be set before the events of the show.
Wang has starred in Disney’s Chang Can Dunk, a direct-to-video sports drama about basketball, as well as Disney short film Dinner is Served. He also has a supporting role as a Mathlete in Mean Girls (2024).
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F—ing World) is set to direct, with Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) penning the screenplay and Karen Rosenfelt (Twilight) as producer. The movie will open in theatres on 13 December 2024.
