‘Zootopia 2’ Reclaims Top Box Office Spot Over Third Weekend, Soars Past US$1B Globally

Disney’s animated hit sequel Zootopia 2 continues to dominate at the box office, as after falling slightly behind over its second release weekend, the film has reclaimed the top box office spot over its third, soaring past the coveted US$1 billion mark after just 18 days.

As reported by Variety, the sequel has now earned a total of US$1.13 billion globally, overtaking Disney’s previous champion, the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake. Over the weekend of 13 December, Zootopia 2 added a staggering US$131.1 million to its global tally, with a majority of its total earnings – US$877 million – being from overseas markets.

In particular, US$502 million came from China, where the film was an especially massive hit, with earnings ranking only behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (US$632 million) as the largest Motion Picture Association (MPA) film in the country. In all, Zootopia 2 also ranks as the seventh-biggest animated film in history, surpassing other heavy hitters such as the 2016 original (US$1.025 billion) and 2024’s Moana 2 (US$1.06 billion).

Zootopia 2 reunites the enthusiastic buddy Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin, Once Upon a Time) with the sly fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman, Ozark) in a buddy cop adventure follow-up that tasks the duo with a new mystery to solve when a venomous snake arrives in the animal metropolis. Joining the dynamic duo are other returning stars such as Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellweather, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, singer Shakira as Gazelle, Tommy Chong as Yax, and Maurice LaMarche as Mr Big.

Elsewhere at the weekend box office, Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 fell to second place with a respectable US$8.6 million, bringing it to an impressive total of US$269 million globally, while Wicked: For Good continues to perform well despite being in its fourth weekend with a grand total of US$468 million globally.
