Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film reboot has received some new footage, teasing some video game easter eggs alongside the first look at an iconic franchise monster, the Zombie dog/Cerberus.

Unveiled via the film’s new TV spot and posted online by users on social media, the 30-second clip features largely the same clips seen in past trailers, but with some quick but notable additions, most iconic of all being its closing scene, which sees Austin Abrams’ Bryan coming face-to-face with a barking dog, only for it to unleash its tentacles on him.
Fans of the gaming franchise will no doubt be familiar with this iconic beast, as Zombie dogs have been a staple of the series since its inception. In the games, there are two types of canine enemies – Zombie dogs and the Cerberus, the latter being experimental creatures infected with the initial T-Virus strain, while the former are just normal dogs who are mutated by the virus upon contact, which is what the version seen in the movie seems to be.
Elsewhere in the trailer, yet another video game easter egg makes an appearance, this time being a brief shot where the scene transitions into the first-person point of view, as Bryan fends off an incoming infected with his pistol. This mirrors the perspective of later games in the franchise, beginning with 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and subsequently 2021’s Resident Evil Village, which adopted the first-person perspective to improve immersion and the horror.
While the movie is set during the events of 1998’s Resident Evil 2, which sees the fall of Raccoon City due to the zombie outbreak, it will exist separately from the gaming universe, so don’t expect the appearances of franchise icons like Leon Kennedy or Ada Wong. The film centres on its new protagonist, the medical courier Bryan, who is tasked with making a delivery to the Raccoon City General Hospital when all hell breaks loose. The film also stars Johnno Wilson as Max, an Arklay Sheriff, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser as Umbrella Scientists.
Resident Evil is slated for theatrical release on 18 September.
