Hiccup and Toothless have yet to make their live-action debut, but they are already due for a return trip to the skies. A live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is currently in the works at Universal Pictures, with franchise veteran Dean DeBlois — whose directing credits include the original animated trilogy and the upcoming feature — back at the helm.

As announced during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon 2025, the sequel will hit theatres on 11 June 2027, one week after Sony’s animated threequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse swings onto the silver screen. Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us, Dumbo) are set to reprise their roles as the main duo, but other details about the project remain under wraps.
The news comes two months before the premiere of the first film. It takes flight on 13 June, with Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) and Gerard Butler (300) joining the cast as Fishlegs and Stoick the Vast, respectively. Previously, Butler also lent his voice to the character in the first two animated entries from Dreamworks Animation.
Based on the novel by author Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon follows the adventures of a scrawny misfit teen named Hiccup in the mythical viking village of Berk, who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless — defying a long-standing tradition where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for centuries.

The sequel is set five years later and centres on the pair uncovering a plot to harness an army of dragons. It featured the voices of Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, America Ferrera, and as mentioned earlier, Butler, and would go on to spawn a third entry, The Hidden World in 2019. The franchise scored a combined haul of US$1.6 billion at the global box office and four Oscar nominations.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 soars into theatres on 11 June 2027.
