It came as a surprise drop, but the first trailer for Ms Marvel certainly didn’t disappoint with its quirky and fun tone—an approach that seems to hint at a different presentation of a superhero origin story. Coming to Disney+ on 8 June 2022, the show marks the debut of Ms Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and follows a young girl named Kamala Khan as she starts gaining superpowers.
The footage, which is adorned with comic-like effects like 2D animated word bubbles and scrawled frames, takes on a unique spin that has yet to be explored by other MCU project to date. Featuring cosmic daydreams, teenage angst, and comedy, Ms Marvel appears to combine Khan’s coming-of-age story with her superhero transformation. It’s plenty lively, filled with good vibes from the ’80s, and also shows Khan’s new energy powers originating from gauntlets.
While comic fans might be skeptical of this change, there’s at least some promise of her cosmic powers replicating the enlargement abilities of her comic counterpart. More notably, the trailer emphasises Khan’s Pakistani heritage and her identity as a Muslim woman, which are important character elements that Marvel is dedicated to honouring in the show.
“An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel,” reads a synopsis of the series. “Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?”
The titular character will be played by newcomer Iman Vellani, who is set for an appearance in the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, alongside Brie Larson. Other cast members include Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan, Mohan Kapoor as Yusuf Khan, Rish Shah as Kamran, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, Yasmeen Fletcher as Nakia Bahadir, Travina Springer as Tyesha Hillman, Laith Nakli as Sheikh Abdullah, Overwatch star Anjali Bhimani in an unannounced role, and more.
Ms Marvel is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah of the Bad Boys for Life fame, and will feature Marvel’s first on-screen Muslim hero. The six-episode series is part of the MCU universe expansion, which will introduce viewers to new characters such as She-Hulk and Moon Knight.
