’28 Years Later’ Sequel ‘The Bone Temple’ Lands January 2026 Release

It seems Sony Pictures isn’t wasting any time, announcing that The Bone Temple, the sequel to next year’s 28 Years Later, has already locked in a release window for January 2026.

As part of the zombie apocalypse trilogy by producer Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, The Bone Temple will be directed by Nia DaCosta, best known for 2023’s The Marvels and 2021’s Candyman, with Garland returning to write its screenplay. Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to return, following his comments on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that the team shot 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple back-to-back.

Cillian Murphy, star of the original 2002 film 28 Days Later, will also reprise his role in both upcoming films, as he was spotted on set in Ennerdale, allegedly filming both the end of 28 Years Later and the beginning of The Bone Temple. Although his exact role remains unknown, the actor will also serve as executive producer on the latter project.

According to Ralph Fiennes in an interview with IndieWire, the film has already completed production, but plot details remain under wraps. However, more will likely be revealed once 28 Years Later hits theatres next June.

Sony recently released its first trailer for 28 Years Later, set 22 years after the original and expanding upon its world ravaged by the Rage Virus. The film’s official synopsis reads, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.”

“One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”

28 Years Later will hit cinemas on 20 June 2025, with its sequel The Bone Temple following in January 2026.
