‘Dune: Prophecy’ Marks Return To Arrakis With Season 2 Renewal

The spice must flow, and so will fate. As written in the stars, Dune: Prophecy has been renewed for Season 2 at HBO, a few days before the first season’s finale is set to air. The news comes from a virtual press conference, with showrunner Alison Schapker teasing, “How the sisterhood survives is very much a part of Season 2” (via Deadline).

No other details have been revealed, including a release window. Set more than 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, the prequel series follows the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the fabled sect of powerful witches that influences Arrakis’ politics.

The female-driven narrative draws upon the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, with Emily Watson (The Theory of Everything, Hilary and Jackie) and Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense, The Crown) starring as lead characters Valya and Tula Harkonnen respectively, who join forces to fend off humankind against powerful combat forces.

Those familiar with Dune lore will recognise them as the ancestors of House Harkonnen, which betrays Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet, Little Women) and his father in the films. In the show, Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Sherlock Holmes) plays Emperor Javicco Corrino, while Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Knightfall, Black Lake) portrays his daughter, Princess Ynez. Other cast members include Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.

Dune: Prophecy Season 2

The Season 2 renewal for Dune: Prophecy doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. According to HBO, its premiere episode pulled in about 15 million views across Max’s covered territories, with the final episode airing later this week on 22 December. Apart from being a showrunner, Schapker also serves as executive producer alongside co-creator Diane Ademu-Jogn.

No release date is attached to the forthcoming outing.
