The film’s release date has now been shifted from 10 November 2027 to 9 June 2028, while Ritchson, who was previously reported to be in talks to star, has now been confirmed as one of the Helldivers, although it remains to be seen if he will be the movie’s main character.

The movie is also shaping up to be pretty different than initially planned, particularly regarding its leading cast, with Jason Momoa (Aquaman) previously slated to star in the film before leaving the project in June this year for unknown reasons.

Directed by Justin Lin of Fast & Furious franchise fame, Helldivers is based on the Arrowhead Game Studios shooter, which sees a group of elite soldiers known as the Helldivers battling alien creatures on distant planets to protect the fictional planet of Super Earth. Details on the plot of its live-action adaptation, however, remain under wraps.

Helldivers Film Adaptation CES 2025

The original Helldivers game launched in 2015 as a cooperative top-down shooter and would later receive a sequel in 2024, which expanded the game’s universe and improved many of its gameplay aspects, with the title often considered one of the best examples of a modern live-service game, one that is still receiving post-launch content to this day.

The Helldivers live-action movie also marks the next video game-related film project between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions following 2022’s Uncharted, and adds to the rising trend of recent video game movies like Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, Legendary’s Street Fighter, and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda.
