The WFH situation in Singapore is still pretty much in full force, despite the lifting of the Circuit Breaker in June. Despite many Singaporeans still being stuck home, the prospect of celebrating the Little Red Dot’s upcoming 55th birthday this August with eyes glued to the TV screen might not be one most are looking forward to.
But with 106 films and TV series made in Singapore coming to the streaming service from 1 August onwards, it might not be such a bad time to be stuck at home after all. In collaboration with local studios Clover Films, MM2 Entertainment, Memento Films, and Mediacorp, Singaporeans (and those with a VPN in other countries) will soon be able to enjoy local delights on Netflix.

Among these are iconic TV series from the ’90s and early 2000s such as Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, Growing Up, and Under One Roof. As well as movies such as Jack Neo classics in I Not Stupid and Homerun, and the award-winning Ilo Ilo by Anthony Chen.
Not all 106 shows and movies will be added right away; here’s a quick overview of what’s coming from August to October:

“As a Singaporean growing up with a lot of these classic shows and films myself, I am incredibly excited to enrich the Netflix catalog with these best-in-class Singaporean stories that are made in Singapore, by Singaporeans, for Singaporeans, to celebrate this National Day,” said Raphael Phang, content acquisition manager for Southeast Asia at Netflix.
“By making these titles easily accessible through Netflix, we hope that it will reignite the joy they’ve brought to many Singaporeans over the decades, but more importantly introduce these great works of art by some of the best local filmmakers to the younger generations.”
As part of the upcoming National Day celebrations, Netflix has also teamed up with students from LASALLE College of the Arts to reimagine iconic scenes from several classic movies and shows coming to the streamer. The collaboration includes the students interviewing members of the older generation to share their stories watching these iconic shows, and then recreating posters which will be posted on Netflix Singapore’s Instagram page.
Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
