As the Death Stranding movie adaptation inches closer to release, director Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One) has teased that the project is targeting to start filming in 2027, and that although the film will feature an original storyline, it will also see some appearances from familiar game characters.

Speaking during an interview with Variety, Sarnoski explained that he recently turned in the second draft of the film’s script with the hopes of beginning filming sometime next year in Iceland and Northern Ireland. Additionally, the director also teased that the film will feature “overlapping characters” despite being his own original take on the IP.
“I want it to feel big, but also offbeat and character-driven,” he explained. “This takes place in the world of the video game, but I have my own set of characters. There are some like overlapping characters that fans will be excited to see, but it’s very much my own story within this universe.”
As to which characters from the games would make an appearance remains to be seen, as Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding franchise offers no shortage of heavy-hitters, including Norman Reedus’ Sam Porter Bridges, Léa Seydoux’s Fragile, Margaret Qualley’s Mama, Troy Baker’s Higgs Monaghan, and Mads Mikkelsen’s Clifford Unger. Previously, Reedus had stated his interest in reprising his role in a film, but since the movie is set to feature an original take, it’s likely that his appearance, if it even happens, will be limited to just a reference or cameo.

A24 will produce the film in partnership with Ari Aster and his producing partner, Lars Knudsen, with Kojima also heavily involved with the film’s production. For now, it seems that fans are still in for quite a long wait until the Death Stranding movie becomes a reality, although the movie isn’t the only franchise adaptation fans can look forward to, either, with an animated TV series and anime film also in the works.
