Upcoming Fantastic Four MCU Movie Won’t Be An Origin Story

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 was a ride for Marvel fans who have been antsy to know what they can expect in Phase 5 and Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Amongst the plenty of announcements made by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige – including the two major Avengers movies, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars – one movie that fans have been dying to see is a new Fantastic Four movie.

The Fantastic Four was previously brought to life by Fox in 2005 and 2007. It starred Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis as the titular heroes. In 2015, director Josh Trank released his own version and it was box office disaster.

Feige promised that Marvel Studios’ version will be different and that unlike past iterations, it will not be an origin movie. He compared Marvel’s new take on the heroes to its pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU.

A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” said Feige. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

Marvel is usually tight-lipped when it comes to revealing upcoming plans but Feige seemed generous during his presentation. Perhaps, Marvel feels a little bit of pressure from fans. Avengers: Endgame set box office records, including for a time, being the highest-grossing film of all time. Whilst Marvel’s latest Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have raked in big bucks, Phase 4 has been a bit of a hit or miss and didn’t generate the same amount of hype or excitement that Phase 3 brought. This is even after debuting new characters like Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, Iman Vellani’s Ms Marvel and soon, Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk.

According to Feige, the future phases of the MCU will continue this trajectory of introducing new characters and will continue to evolve and reshape the MCU as we know it.

“It’s about resetting the MCU and meeting all these new characters,” said Feige regarding the aim of Marvel’s movies.

Feige also revealed that the Fantastic Four movie is currently slated to release on 8 November 2024. Whilst no director or cast have been announced, John Krasinski, who portrayed Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has teased the possibility of his return.

While chatting with talk show host Jimmy Fallon about Marvel Studios’ announcements at San Diego Comic-Con, Krasinski admitted that he couldn’t say anything about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He joked about being desperate to learn information regarding the movie but said he wouldn’t know anything until “right before (they’re) about to shoot.”

Fallon also brought up rumours about Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, playing the MCU’s Sue Storm. As Krasinski was about to reveal something about the film, he faked being shot by a dart and dying as the crowd burst into laughter.

As usual, fans will just have to wait and see. Thankfully, the wait won’t be too long as fans can expect footage and more secrets revealed when Marvel returns to the stage at D23 on 9 September.
