Ubisoft’s ‘Watch Dogs’ Movie Escapes Development Hell, Finishes Filming

More than 10 years after it was announced, Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs movie has finally wrapped up filming.

The origins of the film date back to its announcement in 2013, one year before the release of the original Watch Dogs game. After being stuck in development hell for over a decade, filming finally commenced in July 2024, announced via an update on X/Twitter with the caption “Lights_Camera_Action.exe” alongside a set photo. A similar update was made on 14 September, this time celebrating the end of filming with the caption “run film_wrapped.exe(#watchdogsmovie.mp4) >Filming complete!”

For now, Ubisoft is still keeping details of the new film under wraps, with little known about its plot and if it would follow any of the series’ three games or be a separate story altogether. The film has confirmed its director, however, with French filmmaker Mathieu Turi (The Deep Dark, Meander) taking the helm, working off the screenplay written by Christie LeBlanc (Oxygen).

The film has also secured its leading cast, with Tom Blyth best known from the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Sophie Wilde from Talk to Me. No details have been revealed as of yet regarding which characters the duo would portray, but more information on their roles and other cast members is expected soon.

Watch Dogs Movie

Watch Dogs is not the only Ubisoft franchise set to receive an on-screen adaptation. A live-action Assassin’s Creed series and a movie based on Tom Clancy’s The Division is currently in development by Netflix, with animated adaptations of Far Cry and Splinter Cell also planned. The film won’t be Turi’s first foray into the world of video games either, as he is also working on a TV show based on Asobo Studio’s A Plague Tale.

No release date has been announced for Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs movie.
