Flora & Ulysses

A mash-up of a girl, a superhero and a squirrel, Flora & Ulysses is one of the latest Disney+ Original releases based on the children’s novel Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures, by American author Kate DiCamillo.

We had the chance to catch this show before its premiere if you want to read more about it. Flora & Ulysses is a cute and cuddly superhero flick that we believe is perfect for the family and kids – or simply just a really fun and entertaining flick after you’re done with the superhero flicks from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Don’t forget to also check out our Geek Exclusive interview with Alyson Hannigan, who plays Flora’s mother, Phyllis Buckman.

Safety

If you’re looking for something slightly more inspirational and less make-believe, Safety might be a good choice. It is a biographical film inspired by the story of Ray McElrathbey, a football player who struggled to join the Clemson Tigers. Portrayed by Jay Reeves, the movie explores Ray’s adversities as he tries to balance his school life and football career while tackling family issues.

It is an empowering story that’s worth your time as it delves into a young man’s challenges and his dedication to become a footballer and a brother.

Hamilton

“A story of America then, told by America now.”

This version of Hamilton, the hit musical film that took Broadway by storm, was filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016. The story revolves around the American founding father Alexander Hamilton and features scores that blend a variety of genres like hip-hop and R&B. This musical is an impressive visual masterpiece that goes into topics such as culture, politics and education.

Premiered Off-Broadway, the musical itself received critical acclaim and won eight Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical. The amount of awards Hamilton to win even after the show was transferred to The Richard Rodgers Theatre was astounding.

Now recorded into a film, we can save ourselves the difficulty to watch the show live and enjoy the influential performance in the comfort of our homes. Hamilton is one of those musicals that one must at least watch once in their lifetime.

Clouds

Based on the memoir Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom’s Small Prayer in a Big Way by Laura Sobiech, Clouds follows the life of Zack Sobiech and his confrontation against cancer.

A touching biography that tells the tale of how Zach’s world was turned upside down after finding out how he only has a limited time to live. The heartbreaking film explores his music and delves into his inspiring story being a testament as to what can happen when you start living your life as if it is every day is your last. The film even includes several footages of the real Zach.

Prepare some tissues for this one.

Togo

Another untold true story, Togo is about the courage and determination of Leonhard Seppala and his sled dog, Togo as they cross over the harsh climates of the Alaskan tundra to save their city.

The movie revolves around the champion dogsled trainer played by Willem Dafoe and his journey with Togo to transport an antitoxin serum after a deadly epidemic strikes his town of Nome, Alaska. Togo is an exhilarating and emotional adventure that will definitely put you on the edge of your seat. So sit tight and give this film a go if you want an uplifting cinematic experience.
