‘The Suicide Squad’s Idris Elba Wants Bloodsport Vs. Superman Showdown

Just like John Cena and Peacemaker, Idris Elba wants to return to his role as Bloodsport.

The Suicide Squad is one of the best DC films to come out in recent memory. The rambunctious, blood-soaked action comedy introduced many new characters to moviegoers – Elba’s Bloodsport is one of them. Now, after a year since his debut the 49-year-old actor wants to suit up once again and get this, fight Superman.

“I would definitely like to tell the Superman story. There’s no doubt,” said Elba in an interview with Variety. “Bloodsport versus Superman. It needs to happen.”

For anyone who hasn’t seen the James Gunn-directed film, Bloodsport was thrown into Belle Reve Penitentiary because the deadly assassin shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet and sent the beloved hero into the ICU. Bloodshot survived the battle against Starro and was last seen blackmailing Amanda Waller into setting his team free by the end of the movie.

Bloodsport was such a complex character whose daddy issues, competitiveness and fear of rats made him a relatively fun villain. Themes of fatherhood were touched upon in the movie and viewers saw some development for the character. Seeing him before his time with Task Force X could be an interesting juxtaposition to his personal growth in that film.

Plus, it’s no secret that the DCEU has been lacking in the Superman department lately. It’s been bats for Batman in the past year with the release of The Batman, the announcement and subsequent cancellation of Batgirl, Ben Affleck’s return to the role for Aquaman 2, casting for Joker 2 and an animated movie amongst many others.

Seeing Superman return would be a refreshing change. Fans obviously want Henry Cavill back as the iconic character and actors like Dwayne Johnson have teased Superman’s possible return at last month’s SDCC but if, when and who would resurrect Clark Kent from the dead is still unknown.

A Bloodsport vs Superman fight would be interesting and can help weave Bloodsport’s past and present together. With Warners now taking a page from Marvel’s playbook and formulating a 10-year plan when it comes to creating DC content too, we’re curious to see how Bloodsport will fit in that plan – if he’s even part of it in the first place.

Guess all we have to do is wait with bated breath to see if Bloodsport will have a future in the DCEU and if Cavill will return as Superman. In the meantime, fans can stream The Suicide Squad on HBO Max now.
